When Steve was a kid, he attended a week-long Lego camp where he learned to build robots out of Lego blocks. As you can see, he was a hip nerdy kid before it was cool.

One day, a camper started telling Steve and another boy jokes. He told racist jokes about minorities and recounted jokes at the expense of women. Then, Steve remembers the camper said something to effect of: “How do you know if there’s a Jew in a crowd? Throw a penny down the street and see who chases after it.”

Though at the time Steve didn’t fully get the joke, he says he instinctively felt upset. He didn’t know how to respond and yet knew that what his fellow camper had said was deeply wrong and even hurtful.
