Indian cinema seems to have changed in recent years… What is happening is the emergence of new audiences and a new breed of directors. They are younger and more aware of international cinema. They want a fresh approach with interesting subjects.

Has the rise of multiplex cinemas played a part? Yes. They are a space for middle classes to go to the cinema and watch films. In the 1990s, single-theatre cinemas were being demolished because families were watching films at home on VCR or DVD but the multiplexes have completely changed the scenario.

Is the new wave of Indian cinema more appealing to international audience? Yes. I can see the changes happening in front of me so let’s see where it leads in terms of maturing. I hope it can create a kind of international language so we can truly say our films are travelling abroad and are watched internationally.
